Variational formulation of ideal fluid flows according to gauge principle

چکیده
On the basis of the gauge principle of field theory, a new variational formulation is presented for flows of an ideal fluid. The fluid is defined thermodynamically by mass density and entropy density, and its flow fields are characterized by symmetries of translation and rotation. The rotational transformations are regarded as gauge transformations as well as the translational ones. In addition to the Lagrangians representing the translation symmetry, a structure of rotation symmetry is equipped with a Lagrangian ΛA including the vorticity and a vector potential bilinearly. Euler’s equation of motion is derived from variations according to the action principle. In addition, the equations of continuity and entropy are derived from the variations. Equations of conserved currents are deduced as the Noether theorem in the space of Lagrangian coordinate a. Without ΛA, the action principle results in the Clebsch solution with vanishing helicity. The Lagrangian ΛA yields non-vanishing vorticity and provides a source term of non-vanishing helicity. The vorticity equation is derived as an equation of the gauge field, and the ΛA characterizes topology of the field. The present formulation is comprehensive and provides a consistent basis for a unique transformation between the Lagrangian a space and the Eulerian x space. In contrast, with translation symmetry alone, there is an arbitrariness in the transformation between these spaces.

Statistical mechanics of vortex lines
Statistical mechanics of three-dimensional flows of an ideal incompressible fluid is considered. An ideal fluid differs from the usual Hamiltonian systems of statistical mechanics by possessing an infinite number of integrals of motion that are circulations of velocity over closed fluid contours. To reduce the problem to a standard one, the governing equations should be written in a Hamiltonian...
متن کاملA Canonical Transformation Relating the Lagrangian and Eulerian Description of Ideal Hydrodynamics
In fluid mechanics, two ways exist to specify the fields. The one most often used is the Eulerian description, in which the fields are considered as functions of the position in space, and time. The Lagrangian description, on the other hand, is based on the observation that many quantities specifying the fluid refer more fundamental ly to small identifiable pieces of matter, the "fluid particle...
متن کاملA Mixed Formulation of a Sharp Interface Model of Stokes Flow with Moving Contact Lines
Two-phase fluid flows on substrates (i.e. wetting phenomena) are important in many industrial processes, such as micro-fluidics and coating flows. These flows include additional physical effects that occur near moving (three-phase) contact lines. We present a new 2-D variational (saddlepoint) formulation of a Stokesian fluid with surface tension that interacts with a rigid substrate. The model ...
متن کاملCanonical Description of Ideal Magnetohydrodynamics and Integrals of Motion
In the framework of the variational principle there are introduced canonical variables describing magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows of general type without any restrictions for invariants of the motion. It is shown that the velocity representation of the Clebsch type introduced by means of the variational principle with constraints is equivalent to the representation following from the generaliza...
